One of the major expectations Alpha Kappa Lambda has of all chapters is that they continually host and participate in community service and philanthropic events. These activities allow us to give back to the local area and even further-reaching depending on the event. We encourage all chapters to do both local projects that help campus and surrounding areas and participate in the AKL National Philanthropies.

Community Service or Philanthropy

Philanthropy involves raising money through an activity or fundraising event that supports a charitable cause. A desire to help mankind through the giving of gifts, usually monetary in nature, to humanitarian or charitable organizations.

Community Service involves hands-on service to an organization, cause, or community. It involves working with others and facing real-life problems and issues head-on through active participation.

“These Hands Don’t Hurt”

The Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda understands that sexual assault and domestic violence is a serious issue in society today. “These Hands Don’t Hurt” was initially established to raise awareness and educate college students about these issues. Today, that is not enough.

We must be working to change individual behavior, not just of college men, but of all those around us. This change is more complicated and will not be sufficiently achieved wherever the low goal of raising awareness and explaining rules and policies is the standard. This matters because we must avoid a false sense of accomplishment.

“These Hands Don’t Hurt” will adapt to society today and we can start on college campuses using education, service, and philanthropic projects. As the fraternity’s national philanthropy, AKL hopes to lay the foundation for chapters and members to create an environment of support within their campuses and communities.

Adopt-A-School

Adopt-A-School was endorsed by the National Executive Council during their Winter 1994 meeting. The goal of Adopt-A-School is to provide for the formation of one-on-one relationships between college students and local elementary school children. This program provides an opportunity for college students to give something back to their host communities by devoting their spare time to elementary school children.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) was chosen in 1990 as one of AKL National Philanthropies because of the urgent need to change the outlook for individuals with Cystic Fibrosis and benefit today’s children and young adults from these changes. Researchers are on the brink of far-reaching discoveries about the mechanisms by which Cystic Fibrosis affects the body. With Alpha Kappa Lambda’s help, we hope the future for those who have Cystic Fibrosis will become much brighter.
